Three ways people use it

Meetings

Offsites, board meetings, training and workshops

Hourly meeting room and conference room hire, without the hotel. The usual alternative is a hotel function room with no windows, a catering minimum, a final headcount due three weeks out, and a sales call before anyone will tell you a price. This is the other option.

Windows on three walls and skylights over the middle of the room. A permanent conference corner with a powered conference table seating eight. A large screen on a rolling cart, a whiteboard, and a chalkboard painted straight onto the brick. Guest wifi on its own network. Restrooms on the same floor. Lunch comes from wherever you want it to.

Events

Receptions, parties, pop-ups and markets

Open floor, old wood, exposed brick, and light coming in from three sides until it goes down behind Mill Mountain. Nine heavy timber posts and a beamed ceiling do the decorating for you.

There is no kitchen, no bar and no event staff here. That is also why there is no catering minimum and no beverage package. Bring the caterer you want, bring what you want to drink, and set the room up the way the evening needs it. Alcohol needs a one-day license or a licensed vendor, and events need a certificate of insurance naming us: both are covered on the pricing page. Amplified music comes down at 10pm, city rule.

Video & Production

Film and video shoot location in Roanoke

Nine timber posts on a fifteen-foot grid, original plank floors, exposed brick, a chalkboard wall, and glazing on three walls with skylights over the north-center, so the light moves through the day.

Load-in is a 4,500 lb freight elevator and a lot right outside. The room takes the work that needs the whole floor: multi-camera setups, forty people on set, audience-present recording.

The room is booked whole-floor, for work that needs the space and the daylight. Smaller commissions belong with Albemarle Studios, our ground-floor tenant.

If you have ever been handed a $2,400 food-and-beverage minimum for a room you only wanted for an afternoon, this is the trade. You bring your own caterer and you set the room up yourself, and in exchange you pay for the room and nothing else.

The building

Built in 1912 for the Virginia Can Company.

Cans came off these floors for forty years: Virginia Can, then United States Can from 1927, then Continental Can, which kept the lines running until 1951. Kenrose Manufacturing turned the floors into a clothing factory in 1952. S. H. Heironimus, Roanoke’s own department store, bought the complex in 1963 and warehoused here into the early 2000s. Their painted sign is still on the wall, and the Continental Can ghost sign is still on the south parapet.

The building has been individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 22 February 2006, and is on the Virginia Landmarks Register. Today the ground floor holds a record shop and Albemarle Studios. The second floor is where the Star View Room is.

After dark the Mill Mountain Star sits framed in the south windows. That is where the room gets its name.
